The ViPARE project
Villes Propres, Accueillantes et Respectueuses de l’Environnement (clean, welcoming and environmentally friendly cities): detecting and mapping litter in cities to measure the impact of cleaning work on urban cleanliness.
OBJECTIVE
The ViPARE project aims to help local authorities measure and quantify the impact of their cleaning work (and other cleanliness investments), in order to identify ways to improve public hygiene.
Technically, the project is based on a mobile app that lets field operators detect, categorise, track and count litter such as packaging, soiling and cigarette butts; a system for collecting this geolocated data; and maps that provide a better understanding of how litter density and types change over space and time.

THE CHALLENGE
Objective, replicable indicators
The challenge for the various stakeholders is to track changes in the amount of litter along roads and at litter hotspots in a way that is simple, effective, automated and inexpensive, but above all systematic and standardised. Local authorities can use these metrics to report on their actions to their partners and to citizens.
Frugal AI
An innovative, frugal artificial intelligence model (our approach).
Geolocated tracking
A geolocated tracking system for observations.
CoBra app
Compteur urBain par Reconnaissance Automatique (urban counter using automatic recognition).
Mapping
Centralisation, analysis and mapping of litter data.
THE CONSORTIUM
A local authority, a laboratory and an innovative company
ViPARE brings together the cleaning department of the City of Metz, the Water and Environment Laboratory of Gustave Eiffel University and NAIA Science.
